The FAI health post, part of the health map of Kolda health district, was built in 2009 by the YOU Foundation – Education for Children in Need and its partner Dr Siegfried Axtmann of Fly Ambulance International (FAI) in community of Medina Cherif, Kolda, Senegal.
UNITED TEAMS – the strategic alliance of the YOU Foundation and HOPE’87, which has been active in this FAI health post since its establishment, has supported the construction of the infirmary with accommodation, the maternity ward with accommodation, a building for the analysis laboratory and ultrasound, as well as equipping it with appropriate medical equipment. These measures made it possible to provide basic medical care for the sick despite the large influx of people from the neighbouring communities who were given access to special services such as blood tests and ultrasounds.
With the improvement in the medical care provided to patients by the staff, the FAI health centre is experiencing a large influx of the population on a daily basis with more than 169 consultations per day by the head nurse and his assistants and 186 consultations per day in the maternity ward for pregnancy consultations, family planning and more than 97 deliveries per month.
The large crowds on the maternity ward led to difficulties in caring for some patients during delivery, as the delivery room is too small and home births are therefore again on the increase.
Phase V of this ‘Cellal Rewbéé’ (healthcare for women) project, therefore aims to achieve the following:
– Enlargement of the delivery room by improving the equipment with an additional delivery table, delivery sets, a warming table and an incubator, a blood pressure monitor and resuscitation masks for newborns.
– The paving of the entrance area in front of the maternity ward and the infirmary to make the environment more pleasant and appropriate for the population during the rainy season.
– Improving the reception area on the maternity ward level by equipping the midwife’s office with office furniture.
– Strengthening the green spaces and trees within the infirmary.
