As part of this project, poor women’s groups in rural areas of Burkina Faso in the Hauts-Bassins region, Kenédougou province, Koloko commune and Mali in the Sikasso region, Sikasso district, Finkolo commune will be strengthened in the area of food security through the valorisation of cereals, fruits and nuts.
The situation in the project area is unsettled due to terrorist attacks, which severely affect households in their daily activities. Due to the danger, poor households have been resettled from the interior of the country to the main towns of the communities (Koloko and Finkolo), where they have been taken in by relatives who already live in the city but in poor living conditions. This has increased the burden on the host families (food, water, firewood, care, …) and exacerbated their vulnerability.
In addition, there are large quantities of unprocessed, edible plant material in the project area, which the women can freely dispose of. This fact remains an important asset in closing the income gap in agricultural production of vulnerable households, as the raw materials for food processing come from natural fruit trees, whose fruits and nuts are processed into foods such as oil and food supplements, the consumption of which increases the protein content in the diet.
This opportunity to generate income by processing local products has so far remained unutilised as the women do not have the necessary capacities – they lack the equipment to process the natural products and the knowledge of the processes required to do so. In addition, the poor households have insufficient access to processed local products on the local market, which they would need for their health.
Therefore, HOPE‘87 Burkina Faso and its implementing partners (communities, women’s groups and professional organisations in the field) will work within the project to strengthen the capacity of women’s groups, set up a processing plant for local products and facilitate poor households’ access to processed products on the local market.
In addition, 200 kg of children’s flour (protein-enriched flour with increased nutritional value) will be distributed free of charge to 100 malnourished children aged 6-23 months and 200 litres of shea oil produced by the women as part of this project will be distributed to 100 very poor households.
