Dozens of people have been injured and 42 killed when the Nor’wester lashed through Bangladesh on 4th of April 2015. The Nor’wester, an intense type of storm that occasionally occurs in Bangladesh and adjacent parts of India, was the first severe storm in the usual spring storm season. It lashed through Dhaka, Rajshahi, Bogra, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, Chapainawabaganj, Gaibandha, Sherpur, Manikganj and Narshindi districts in Bangladesh. Bogra was the worst affected district and several people were killed by collapsing walls and falling trees.

The storm death toll hits 42 across the country.

1,894 families were affected by the Nor’wester.

28,667 houses were completely damaged.

70,301 houses were partially damaged.

Over 254 educational institutions were affected of which 26 institutions were fully damaged.

147 cattle were also killed during the storm.

HOPE’87 Bangladesh, after consultation with the relevant authorities, immediately started a rapid assessment in Bogra district and contributed to the emergency relief with food distribution and shelter construction support both for affected families, as well as to a school building in Bogra district.
