Food security and income generation in semi-urban areas of Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso
Komsilga, Région du Centre
Project Duration:
01/01/2015 to 31/12/2016
Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC), HOPE'87
Project Description:

This project focuses on the reinforcement of food security and the fight against poverty. The project area includes 34 villages of the rural community Komsilga in Burkina Faso. Although this semi-urban region has a good market access due to its proximity to the capital Ouagadougou, the problems of "land grabbing" and high prices apply great pressure on the majority of the poor agricultural households.

The specific goal of the project is to improve the income of the agricultural sector in a sustainable way and to prevent the malnourishment of small children by implementing specific measures. Therefore, one of the main aims of the project is to improve the vegetable cultivation in order to improve income and the nutrious value  and to support the commercialisation of non-agricultural products, because of their suitability to sell them and create income.

In addition, these activities will benefit the environment as they prevent deforestation and contribute to sustainable land use.

Due to these project activities more than 400 households (approximately 2 800 people) could be reached and supported directly. Indirectly, about 87 000 people will benefit from this project.
