Malian poultry farm in full swing…

In support of local Malian as well as Burkinabe farmers “UNITED TEAMS - the strategic alliance of the YOU Foundation and HOPE’87” established a poultry farm in the village of Heremakono, right on the border of Mali and Burkina Faso, about 45km to the East of Sikasso, the capital of the 3ème Cercle of Mali.

The newly constructed, solar-energy equipped model farm with two chicken coops for 200 chicks and 200 layers, a small production unit for poultry feed, an own well and storage areas also disposes of classroom facilities and a dormitory to offer local farmers from both sides of the border courses on modern chicken farming.

The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the SDG 2 to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture in Mali and Burkina Faso. Specifically, it aims to contribute to the promotion of social entrepreneurship by small poultry farmers and the pooling of means for a reinforced production in the field of poultry farming in the Hauts-Bassins Region of Burkina Faso and in the Third Region of Mali.

Apart from setting up the model chicken farm, this involves also the organization of the small farmers in two Groupements d’Interet Economique (GIE) or Economic Interest Groups, one on each side of the border, to represent, defend and implement actions for the development of their members.

Improved technical skills in egg production as well as in marketing and sale of agricultural products will further contribute with a support fund for financing smallholder projects to a sustainable level of food security and income generation in this border region.

A big thank you goes to Big Dutchman, worldwide the biggest provider of feeding systems and housing equipment for modern pig and poultry production, generously supporting this project!
