International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Every year on October 17th the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated in order to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty.

In a world characterized by an unprecedented level of economic development, technological means and financial resources, that millions of persons still have to live in extreme poverty is a moral outrage. Thus, to end poverty in all its forms everywhere is goal 1 of the SDGs.

Persons living in poverty experience many interrelated deprivations that perpetuate their poverty, such as dangerous work conditions, lack of nutritious food or limited access to health care. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated this situation and has resulted in reversing decades of progress in the fight against poverty.

As we start recovering from the pandemic, it should be our goal to build forward together and to end persisting poverty worldwide. Building forward means not only that no one is left behind, but that people living in poverty are actively encouraged to engage in informed and meaningful participation in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives.

To contribute to that goal, HOPE’87 has launched a project in Burundi, where 65% of the population lives in poverty. The aim of this project is to improve the livelihoods of extremely poor households in the community of Rugombo, with a focus on women in rural areas, and reduce the impact of poverty on them by supporting their economic activities.

Since February 2021, the project has empowered 150 vulnerable women through a social protection package provided through savings and loan groups, enabling them to access financial resources and engage in income-generating activities. This enables the women entrepreneurs to expand their business and thus increase their regular income in order to more easily meet their basic needs, such as the cost of their children's education, access to sufficient food and housing.
