Inauguration of the Collège d'Enseignement Moyen (CEM, highschool) in Médina Chérif/Senegal

On January 14th HOPE’87 inaugurated with 500 cheering and laughing students a brandnew C.E.M. (College d’Enseignement Moyen), a highschool, in Medina Chérif, Département Kolda, in the Casmance in the South of Senegal.

The donor, ZF-Friedrichshafen, one of the largest German enterprises with 130.000 staff worldwide and a global leader in driveline and chassis technology as well as active and passive safety technology was represented by its Director of Personel, Dr Robert Omagbemi.

ZF had pledged 500.000 EUR through the „YOU Foundation-Education for Children in Need“ for the construction of a high school in a rural area... and HOPE’87-Senegal did it! And what a beautiful compound it is... in the middle of „nowhere“, dust and sand all around and then: 16 blocks of classes, a fencing wall all around, a library with books and computers fed by solar energy, latrines for boys and girls, hand washing facilities, an administrative block for the teachers and the director, a bore hole with solar-fed water pump, a kitchen and a multi-purpose sports-ground for soccer, basketball, badmington... all paths paved and aligned with green bushes...

The Principal of the school was all smiles when he said:“ All of us teachers are so happy...we never had such a beautiful teaching environment... one could think we are in Thiaroye-sur-Mer (= a coastal suburb of the capital Dakar) and we imagine to hear the sea...“ Yes,indeed, the principal is also a poet who has published already some of his works...

The dazzling inauguration ceremony was further honoured by the presence of the Minister of Eduation of the Republic of Senegal, H.E. Sérigne Mbaye Thiam, the Austrian Ambassador, H.E. Dr Caroline Gudenus, UNESCO Special Ambassador Dr Ute Ohoven, Ms Claudia Jerger, Vice President of the YOU Foundation (Düsseldorf), the Gouverneur of Kolda, the Military Commander of the area  and some 1500 inhabitants of the area... and the 500 students
