Haiti: emergency support and reconstruction

In order to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, HOPE’87 cooperates with its long-term Austrian partner “Jugend Eine Welt- Don Bosco” ensuring a vital and efficient link with the Salesian fathers working in Haiti since 1936.
The emergency aid coming-in is handled by the Salesians in the Dominican Republic organising the transport to Port-au-Prince, where the goods are distributed at the former Don Bosco Center to victims from the area. At the moment more than 4000 victims are cared for in the temporary Salesian camp.
Right now water purification tablets and much needed medication, organised by our reliable donor, the Bavarian “Apotheker helfen” (“Pharmacists help”) is on its way to the disaster area.
According to our mandate and also to help especially the children, we are already thinking of the reconstruction of educational activities. Especially the “Streetchildren Center Lakay” of the Salesians, destroyed by the earthquake killing 200 children and teachers, is on top of our list. Classrooms, dormitories, the kitchen, toilets and the playground need to be reconstructed and equipped again to care for the traumatized children of the disaster.
