Big news - Cité Baraka: Moving from a slum to a modern district in Senegal

After all the dedicated work that the YOU Foundation – Education for Children in Need and HOPE’87 together with their congenial partner CasaOrascom have put into the Baraka project, the project’s vision has finally come true and the United Teams - the strategic alliance of the YOU Foundation and HOPE’87 is proud to share with you that the first half of the slum dwellers of Baraka have finally moved into their new homes!

The people of Baraka used to live in shanty dwellings without medical care, sewerage or even running water due to their scarce income generating activities. But not anymore…together with Mr Samih Sawiris, the CEO of the worldwide ORASCOM group, the slum was rebuilt into a modern district with 127 apartments in the first phase and 143 still to come in phase II. This means enough space in clean, sanitary and warm homes for each family. With the help of an awareness raising sensitization campaign the slum inhabitants were informed about the ways of life that will change for them in the new and modern apartments.

In close cooperation with the Association of German Architects (“Bund Deutscher Architekten”) and the Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf and with the support of the Senegalese Government and the line Ministries the project was carried out successfully.

All gratitude goes out to all the partners and supporters of this project, above all to the ORASCOM group, for making this project possible and dedicating their capacities to improving the   life of the marginalized population..

Particular gratitude goes to the President of the Republic of Senegal, H.E. Macky Sall, for his vision, his support and for the trust he placed on UNESCO Special Ambassador Dr Ute Ohoven, President of the YOU Foundation.

Please, have a look at the photos and see for yourself how Baraka changed from a slum to a modern residential area…
