First Humanitarian Congress in Vienna 2011 - a great success!

On 21st October 2011 the First Humanitarian Congress took successfully place at the University of Vienna, Austria.  The high number of participants and the agitated discussions during the conference sessions reflected the up-to-dateness and the brisance of this topic. International experts from the fields of humanitarian aid, politics, media and academics shared their experiences and discussed recent developments of humanitarian aid.

The congress was organized by the following humanitarian organizations: Doctors without Borders, Care, Caritas, Diakonie, HOPE'87, Austrian Red Cross and World visions.

General Assembly of HOPE'87 

On October 12th the annual General Assembly of HOPE'87 took place at the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv ("Royal Archives") in Vienna. This year's meeting marked the 20th anniversary of the tenure of the Secretary General of HOPE'87.

Now, SET has been awarded a grant of 150.000 € for the next three years under the Pakistan-Italian Debts Swap Agreement (PIDSA)…

Das Landwirtschaftsprojekt, durchgeführt von HOPE’87 und finanziert von der Europäischen Kommission, fährt trotz der Flutkatastrophe hervorragende Erträge ein.

Von den verheerenden Überschwemmungen im Juli/August 2010 in Pakistan waren auch die Landwirte des Projektes „Rehabilitation of livelihood“ im Swat-Tal, finanziert von der Abteilung für Humanitäre Hilfe und Zivilschutz der Europäischen Kommission (abgekürzt ECHO), betroffen. Innerhalb des sechsmonatigen Projekts, das am 1. April 2010 begann, wurden etwa ¾ der Felder, die mit Mais und Tomaten bepflanzt waren, überflutet bzw. die Jungpflanzen teilweise von den Wassermassen beschädigt. Ebenso verloren etwa 50% der Obstbäume einen Teil ihrer Früchte und Teile der Regenwassersammelbecken und Bewässerungskanäle wurden zerstört.

General Assembly of HOPE’87

On October 20th the annual General Assembly of HOPE’87 took place at the Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv (“Royal Archives”) in Vienna. This year’s meeting counted with the presence of a record number of members, guests and representatives of the diplomatic community and partner NGO present.

In his speech the Chairman of HOPE’87, Ambassador Dr. Helmut Böck, referred to the global economic crisis in 2009 and the decline of donations which was successfully answered by the General Secretariat with soft austerity measures guaranteeing all jobs at HQ as well as in the Branch Offices and at the same time ensuring the same high quality of work.

Haiti - 6 months after the earthquake

On 12th of January 2010 an earthquake with the magnitude of 7,2 of the Richter scale killed about 230.000 people in Haiti. The epicentre was close to the overpopulated capital of Port-au-Prince and destroyed the city totally. 3 Mio. people are affected, from that 2 Mio. persons are displaced and 540.000 live in camps.

Mission of HOPE'87 General Secretariat to Chisinau/Republic of Moldova

During their mission to the Republic of Moldova in February 2010 Secretary General Robert Ottitsch and Desk Officer Dr. Maisa Khalil met all relevant stakeholders concerning the project "HOPE for the children of Moldova". A formal meeting with high representatives of the Government as well as with the desk officer of Austrian Development Agency (ADA) for the Republic of Moldova and the coordinator of ADA in Chisinau and Chargé a.i. of the Austrian Embassy constituted the highlight of the mission.

Haiti: emergency support and reconstruction

In order to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, HOPE’87 cooperates with its long-term Austrian partner “Jugend Eine Welt- Don Bosco” ensuring a vital and efficient link with the Salesian fathers working in Haiti since 1936.

European Commission funds a Water and Sanitation intervention in Swat valley, N.W.F.P.

As a result of an armed conflict with the militants in Malakand division of N.W.F.P., Swat like other conflict areas has been adversely affected. No facility is left fully functional on ground. Most severely hit are the public health and engineering facilities such as water supply, clean drinking water, sanitation, health as well as deucational facilities. Additionally the livelihood of the inhabitants is acutely impacted. An immediate intervention for water and sanitation relief is required to avert unmanageable outbreak of epidemics.

HOPE’87 assists at the UNESCO General Conference in Paris

The Secretary General of HOPE’87, Robert Ottitsch, represented the organisation, which enjoys the status “In Operational Relationship with UNESCO” at the General Conference of UNESCO, 6th to 23rd of October, 2009. HOPE’87 cooperates since 1991 with UNESCO and especially with the Sector of Social and Human Sciences (SHS). Mr Ottitsch was also nominated by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affaires as expert to the official Austrian Delegation to the UNESCO General Conference.

Flooding hits Burkina Faso 

According to the United Nations almost 90,000 people have been driven from their homes by flooding in Burkina Faso. The country is one of the hardest hit by recent flooding in western Africa. Regionally, the floods have taken at least 160 lives and affected an estimated 600,000 people. The floods have destroyed or damaged the Central University Hospital, roads and bridges, schools and farmland. 

Re-collecting the sad memories of the disaster in Bangladesh - Photography competition and exhibition in Dhaka to raise awareness and preparedness

Cyclone SIDR hit Bangladesh on 15th November 2007 and caused severe damage in the coastal region with a death toll of approximately 8,000 people. In this view HOPE’87 Bangladesh wants to re-collect the sad memories of the disaster in order to raise awareness and preparedness with domestic resources.

 HOPE'87 Emergency Relief Operations for cyclone victims in Bangladesh continue

After the disastrous cyclone SIDR in November 2007 HOPE’87 has immediately started relief operations, which are successfully ongoing. By the end of June 2008 HOPE’87 handed over 318 semi-temporary shelters to vulnerable families in Barguna and Bagerhat Upazila (district). The shelter construction is made in co-operation with local implementing partners and developed according to local needs. To improve the bad local water and sanitation situation, HOPE’87 has built 258 sanitary latrines for families and 14 deep tube wells providing safe drinking water to 840 community members. Complementary to the construction work the population gets hygiene kits and awareness trainings to learn how to avoid bad hygiene and water borne diseases.

HOPE'87 Emergency Relief Operations 2007/2008 for cyclone victims in Bangladesh - supported by "Jugend Eine Welt- Don Bosco (Austria)", "Jugend Dritte Welt-Don Bosco (Germany)" and Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo (VIS, Italy). 

The UNESCO General Conference, held every two years, will be inaugurated by Director-General Koichiro Matsuura on 16th of October and will last till 3rd of November 2007. HOPE'87, enjoying the official status "In Operational Relationship with UNESCO", has been invited like in previous years to attend the Conference.

On 10th and 11th of December HOPE’87 participated for the 1st time at the ECHO Annual Conference at the EC in Brussels. The Conference focussed on new political impetus and instruments for the humanitarian aid policy. HOPE’87 and the 273 other non-governmental organisations that provide relief assistance signed the renewed "Framework Partnership Agreement" (FPA) for humanitarian with the Commission.

ECHO's task is to ensure goods and services get to crisis zones fast. Goods may include essential supplies, specific foodstuffs, medical equipment, medicines and fuel. Services may include medical teams, water purification teams and logistical support. Goods and services reach disaster areas via ECHO partners.

2.500.000 Internally Displaced Persons in Pakistan- HOPE’87 Helps!

With the support of Ralf Zacherl through the UNESCO Foundation – Education for Children in Need, HOPE’87 and the local population of Taonsgho, a village in the rural district of Tanghin-Dassouri, joined hands and built a school with three classrooms, equipped with a canteen in order to secure basic education as well as school feeding for the youngest.

The school is named after it’s sponsor « Ecole Ralf Zacherl de Taonsgho » and opened it’s doors on October 1st 2008. 300 children are now attending school and are served food from the attached canteen, which is managed by the “Association of Educated Women” and the “Parents Association”.
