HOPE’87 supports the flood victims with potable water, sanitary facilities and measures concerning hygiene, which is financed by the Austrian Development Cooperation.
Approximately six month ago, floods caused by the monsoon destroyed great parts of Pakistan. As HOPE’87 maintains a permanent branch office in Islamabad - HOPE’87-Pakistan - we were one of the first Austrian relief organizations on site to assist with humanitarian aid. “Früchte aus dem SWAT-Tal, Pakistan”
Das Landwirtschaftsprojekt, durchgeführt von HOPE’87 und finanziert von der Europäischen Kommission, fährt trotz der Flutkatastrophe hervorragende Erträge ein. Von den verheerenden Überschwemmungen im Juli/August 2010 in Pakistan waren auch die Landwirte des Projektes „Rehabilitation of livelihood“ im Swat-Tal, finanziert von der Abteilung für Humanitäre Hilfe und Zivilschutz der Europäischen Kommission (abgekürzt ECHO), betroffen. Innerhalb des sechsmonatigen Projekts, das am 1. April 2010 begann, wurden etwa ¾ der Felder, die mit Mais und Tomaten bepflanzt waren, überflutet bzw. die Jungpflanzen teilweise von den Wassermassen beschädigt. Ebenso verloren etwa 50% der Obstbäume einen Teil ihrer Früchte und Teile der Regenwassersammelbecken und Bewässerungskanäle wurden zerstört. Read more... |

This year’s meeting counted with the presence of a record number of members, guests and representatives of the diplomatic community and partner NGO present. In his speech the Chairman of HOPE’87, Ambassador Dr. Helmut Böck, referred to the global economic crisis in 2009 and the decline of donations which was successfully answered by the General Secretariat with soft austerity measures guaranteeing all jobs at HQ as well as in the Branch Offices and at the same time ensuring the same high quality of work. Relief Aid for Flood Victims in Pakistan The rain started on the 27th of July. At first, people were happy about the rain because it would bring some relief after the heat and crops badly needed the water. However, for eight consecutive days the rain did not stop. The rivers burst their banks and flooded the neighbouring villages and fields, dragging along houses, animals and people. Soon, the floods were considered as the biggest disaster to hit Pakistan in decades. And still, it didn't stop raining... By August 23, 1.539 people had lost their lives in the floods and many are still missing.

With grieve and sorrow we are giving note of the passing away of our beloved mentor, advisor and friend, Ms Tamar Oppenheimer, O.C., M.A. LL.D Senior Councillor and Founding Member of HOPE’87, on June 9th, 2010. One of Canada's key officials on the international scene, Tamar Oppenheimer held a variety of high-level positions during her 40 years at the United Nations, including Secretary General of the very productive International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations. Renowned for her devotion, impartiality and professionalism, she personified Canadians' major contribution to the activities of the United Nations and to the promotion of international cooperation. Apart from having been nominated a member of the prestigious Order of Canada, Tamar had received the highest official decorations of the Republic of Austria and of so many other countries around the World. European Commission funds a livelihood intervention in Swat valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa In 2009, Pakistan experienced the worst internal displacement crisis of its history when up to 2.7 million individuals were forced to leave their homes in Malakand Division and Federally Administered Tribal Areas as a result of insecurity and hostilities. Thousands of Pakistani host families, the Federal, Provincial and District Government and the national and international humanitarian community provided food, shelter and other humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Earthquake in Chile On Saturday 27th of February, shortly after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, it was now on Chile to become the site of a terrible natural disaster. An earthquake with the magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale - one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded - and subsequent flood waves rolled over the country and left a scene of destruction. Approximately 800 Chilenian people lost their lives. Thousands of people got injured. Countless buildings are destroyed. Dozens of aftershocks make it difficult to provide adequate support measures. As a result of an armed conflict with the militants in Malakand division of N.W.F.P., Swat like other conflict areas has been adversely affected. No facility is left fully functional on ground. Most severely hit are the public health and engineering facilities such as water supply, clean drinking water, sanitation, health as well as deucational facilities. Flooding hits Burkina Faso According to the United Nations almost 90,000 people have been driven from their homes by flooding in Burkina Faso. The country is one of the hardest hit by recent flooding in western Africa. Regionally, the floods have taken at least 160 lives and affected an estimated 600,000 people. HOPE'87 Emergency Relief Operations for cyclone victims in Bangladesh continue After the disastrous cyclone SIDR in November 2007 HOPE’87 has immediately started relief operations, which are successfully ongoing. By the end of June 2008 HOPE’87 handed over 318 semi-temporary shelters to vulnerable families in Barguna and Bagerhat Upazila (district). The shelter construction is made in co-operation with local implementing partners and developed according to local needs. To improve the bad local water and sanitation situation, HOPE’87 has built 258 sanitary latrines for families and 14 deep tube wells providing safe drinking water to 840 community members. Complementary to the construction work the population gets hygiene kits and awareness trainings to learn how to avoid bad hygiene and water borne diseases. Read more... |

2.500.000 Internally Displaced Persons in Pakistan- HOPE’87 Helps! The ongoing unrest in Swat and the operation against the militants in the area has resulted in insurmountable hardships for the whole population. According to conservative estimates, the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) from Swat is close to 2.500,000 people of which only about 165.000 are housed in temporary camps and more then 2.3 million have taken shelter in schools, make-shift camps or private accommodation. Ralf Zacherl School – Burkina Faso With the support of Ralf Zacherl through the UNESCO Foundation – Education for Children in Need, HOPE’87 and the local population of Taonsgho, a village in the rural district of Tanghin-Dassouri, joined hands and built a school with three classrooms, equipped with a canteen in order to secure basic education as well as school feeding for the youngest.
The school is named after it’s sponsor « Ecole Ralf Zacherl de Taonsgho » and opened it’s doors on October 1st 2008. 300 children are now attending school and are served food from the attached canteen, which is managed by the “Association of Educated Women” and the “Parents Association”.
